The Thwaites Shire Horses were re-introduced in 1960 through the persistence of our past Managing Director Mr David Kay. His quest began in the 1950’s when he urged the Board of Directors to consider reviving the Heavy Horse which had been made redundant in the 20’s when the company converted to motor transport deliveries.
In 1957 the company initiated a suggestion box with £5 to the person whose idea was adopted, (a weeks wages in those days!), he suggested that the Horses were re-introduced partly for deliveries and partly for shows, carnivals and publicity, but each time his idea was rejected.
Then in 1959 he asked for a personal hearing with the Management and the suggestion was finally accepted with the horses, men and equipment arriving in May 1960.
It was a decision that has become a major landmark for the Brewery as the fame of the Thwaites Shires has spread throughout the country, embodying the traditional values that are such an important part of the company’s heritage.
The shire horses are kept very busy and are in great demand at shows, carnivals and promotional events all over the country. They can be seen regularly in the town centre delivering to pubs and exercising in addition to their busy schedule
