Lancaster Bomber is the best ale in England according to judges at the European Beer Star 2007 event, who gave Thwaites’ national premium ale top marks for its full-flavoured taste.

It is the first time a Thwaites beer has received the English Style Ale Gold Award and bosses will celebrate the news by producing commemorative labelling for all bottles from January 2008.

Thwaites marketing manager Lee Williams said the news was the perfect end to an amazing bi-centenary year.

He said: “Lancaster Bomber has always been a great beer with a great reputation. This award means so much to us and underlines what an excellent ale it is."

“Customers place a heavy significance on beers that have won awards, so we always move heaven and earth to win them wherever possible.”

The 2007 European Beer Star Awards is now the world’s third largest beer competition with 575 beers from 28 countries.

The beers were judged by 54 judges from 12 nations and the winners were announced recently in Nuremberg, Germany.

The competition focuses on the traditional art of European brewing and honours special and authentic beers with a character of their own, beers that stand out in taste and quality and which best fulfil the type criteria.

Lee added: “We will make sure that Lancaster Bomber bottles are emblazoned with the accolade and we will be doing this right away."

“The new look labelling will be ready by mid-January and we can’t wait to celebrate the news with everyone."

“Lancaster Bomber is fast becoming the beer that most pubs are selling as their leading premium cask beer as it has a great moreish taste that has wide appeal amongst beer lovers everywhere.”

The gold award caps a memorable year for Lancaster Bomber, which hit the headlines in November when it was unveiled as the official sponsors of Lancashire Cricket Club for the 2008 season.
