Thwaites’ £550k solar panel investment supports greener future

Thwaites has made a significant step towards a more sustainable future with a £550k solar panel investment.
10th October 2025…// Work has just finished at the company’s head office in Mellor, where the new solar panel system is already generating clean energy. It’s expected to cover 100 per cent of the energy required to run the head office building across the year.
Factoring in the energy demands for car chargers and the on-site brewery, the new system will cover approximately 54 per cent of the site’s total usage each year, and excluding car charge usage, the site is expected to be very close to net zero.
Delivered in partnership with renewable energy specialists, Manatec, a major solar project at Thwaites-owned Aztec Hotel & Spa in Bristol has also just completed, with 790 panels fitted across the hotel and The Lodge.
The energy generated is expected to cover approximately 23 per cent of the site’s total electricity use – saving around 71 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
This is Thwaites’ second large-scale solar project of its kind, following the successful installation at Thorpe Park Hotel in Leeds, which saw 600 panels fitted.
Rick Bailey, executive chairman at Thwaites, said: “At Thwaites, we believe that warm hospitality and caring for the environment go hand in hand. Bringing renewable energy to our everyday hotel operations means we’re not only creating relaxing spaces for our guests, but we’re also playing our part in protecting the future of the planet.
“It’s rewarding to see what we’ve achieved so far, and we’re committed to making an even bigger difference.”
The brewery and Thwaites’ portfolio of charming inns have also recently been awarded the Sustainability Champion accolade by the British Institution of Innkeepers (Bii). Recognised for its dedication to reducing waste and responsible sourcing, the award highlights the company’s commitment to building a brighter, more sustainable future across its inns, hotels, and brewery operations.
Founded in 1807, Thwaites has grown from a family-run brewery into a celebrated collection of spa hotels, inns, and pubs across England. Recognised for its warm hospitality, craftsmanship, and character-rich properties, Thwaites continues to blend heritage with modern luxury – offering guests unforgettable experiences in stunning locations from the Lake District to the South Coast.
